Funny, because I've heard these exact words from many people recently...especially with NaNoWriMo in full swing.
So, raise your hands, how many of you have felt like this? I know I have. I know I'm feeling that way right now as I sit here writing this blog entry. I know I'm failing miserably at NaNoWriMo and I'll just openly admit it. This may not be is not my year (I am too focused on my job, school, revision, and sleep....I even skipped horseback riding lessons tonight *gasp* I never do that)
Now, while most of us don't have someone to sit there and yell at us, "Write!!! Don't stop, FOCUS! Rah rah rah..." I'm here to recommend a fun little website that's the next best thing. If you haven't checked out Write or Die yet, it's time to do it. As they say on their website, "Putting the "Prod" in Productivity" (ha ha!)
Ready to scare yourself into writing? You can alter the settings on this website in ways that will force you to get writing. Sit in a quiet room and turn your volume up....if you take too long of a break and you will literally jump out of your skin. Once it happens one time you will NOT want to go through it again (I'm talking from experience).
It's a good website when it comes to the madman stage, or the free-writing stage. Because you're being timed and "watched" that you're continuously typing something, even if it's "I can't think of anything, I am just typing blah blah blah blah blah" you're forced to keep going to get those words on the page. The biggest challenge sometimes is just to get something down on the paper. Once you have something down, you can work within that, even if it's scratching it out and re-writing, you at least have a starting point.
If you visit the website and read the reasoning behind the creation of this tool, you will appreciate it as well as the suggested ways it can be used for drafting. I highly recommend reading the "About" section, and I'd summarize it here, but I think the author there has very eloquently put everything.
